Then, leaving ourselves all of Sunday to recover from the sunburn, and having met MP and Priya (friends of Richa’s from law school who are working in Arusha and were in Dar for the weekend) for a lovely thali lunch, we set off early on Monday back to Kunduchi. The boat arranged, we get to Mbuya island and realise we were wrong before, THIS is where paradise really is! NOT a SOUL on the island other than another couple, and small crew doing some construction on another end of the island, white white WHITE sands and blue blue BLUE water, all to ourselves, and a CORAL reef stretching for nearly a mile. We both snorkeled (yes, even Richa, when bereft of fins found she could swim in the sea, even where her feet don’t touch the sea floor. To paraphrase a great line from history – A small splash for Richa, a big step for, um, also Richa) and Daniel of course, dived, and we saw sergeant fish, a funny half-moon shaped yellow fish (what do you want, we’re not biologists!), parrot fish, tons of little blue fish that rose out of and fell back into a coral like a cloud as Daniel brought his hand closer and took it farther away, and a HUGE puffer fish. Too short a while later, we had to head back to the mainland before the tide went out and more importantly, before the boatman went off duty.
